The Cavalier Rifle Team is the best known secret in the Poconos…. It all started in the early 1950’s when members of the Rifle team shot at targets in the basement of the Bunnell building, and brought their rifles in from home. At the time, East Stroudsburg was one of the few high schools that sported a rifle team, but as time went on, more and more schools continued to start Rifle Teams. Now rifles are supplied by the school district and are stored securely in the rifle range. Today, the Rifle Team competes against Emmaus, Southern Lehigh, ES North, Stroudsburg, and Liberty to name a few.
The Rifle Team is for students who prefer non contact sports and those who enjoy performing at a high level individually in order to benefit the team’s overall score. Experience is not required, and anyone is welcome!
For students interested in joining the Rifle Team, there is a club program for seventh and eighth graders to get a little taste of the sport. The Rifle Club meets during late spring and early summer, and for many students, this is where their Rifle career starts. The mission of the club is to teach safety first, shooting instruction second. At the high school level, intramurals begin Tuesday, October 13th running through the month of October on the 14th, 19th-21st, and again on the 26th-28th, starting right after school and lasting till about five o’clock. The Rifle season is similar to any other sport, starting on November 16th and running through mid-late February. Physical forms are required and can be received from Mrs. Kolcun, Mrs. Brown, or Mrs. Rogers.
